Snapshot: It has been a near-perfect season for the Sydney Swans as they hold a two-game lead in first place on the ladder. With a strong list and consistent performances from their top-up players, the Swans are firming as premiership favourites at this stage of the season.
Best Win: The Swans have produced some big thrashings this year but they really had to dig deep against the Giants in Round 2 at Blacktown. Trailing at both the half-time and three-quarter time breaks, the Swans kicked seven goals to three in the last quarter to win an entertaining battle by 18 points.
Worst Loss: There is only one blemish on Sydney’s record this season and it came in the most heartbreaking fashion when the Giants turned the tables in Round 11 to win by a point in one of the matches of the season so far. In front of a strong pre-AFL game crowd, the two sides added another chapter to a growing rivalry that gets stronger with each passing contest.
Star Power: Brandon Jack has worked up an impressive highlights reel this season through the midfield while Nic Newman is one of the best defenders in the competition. Colin O’Riordan, Jordan Foote and Dean Towers are also consistently among their best players each week.
Next Generation: The Swans have given their 19-year-old academy graduates regular opportunities in their NEAFL side this year and it’s paying huge dividends. Matt Wilson is one of the leading small forwards in the competition, earning a Rising Star nomination alongside fellow forward Ned Reinhard.
The Run Home: The Swans have two byes to come this season before finishing off the regular season with two important hit-outs against finals-bound opponents NT Thunder and Sydney University.
